Grace Library has recently switched from providing tutorials on Niche Academy to providing tutorials via online course modules through Brightspace!
Library tutorials are available through a new self-paced course in Brightpsace: Information Literacy & Research Skills.
This self-paced course is split into 6 different sections, each including step-by-step instructions, examples, and helpful screenshots:
Module 1: Creating Effective Research Questions
Contains information to help students get started with the research process, guiding them through the process of identifying your topic and developing a research question. This module contains two lessons, one on developing a basic research question and one on PICOT questions.
Module 2: Conducting Library Research
This module walks students through a scaffolded approach to conducting library research. Through five lessons, they will be introduced to the process of academic research, starting by identifying library resources and credible sources, through searching the online catalog, and ultimately learning ways to expand their research to other resources.
These lessons are:
Module 3: Qualitative & Quantitative Research
This module provides an overview of the difference between qualitative and quantitative research, as well as a list of related research terms.
Module 4: Evaluating Sources
This module provides students with information on how to assess and evaluate sources they come across in their academic research and equips them with mnemonic tools they can use to do so effectively: the BEAM Method, the CRAAP Test, and the SIFT Method.
Module 5: Plagiarism & Citations
In this module, students are introduced to the concept of plagiarism and the different ways it can occur both intentionally and inadvertently. This module also provides foundational information on the importance of properly citing sources, including AI-generated content.
Module 6: AI in Higher Education
This module provides students with a basic understanding of generative AI and the different ways it can be incorporated into their academic experience. It stresses the importance of responsible AI use, giving clear examples of how AI content is not always accurate and ways to evaluate AI-generated content.
To access these modules, log into your Brightspace account and search for the title or for "InfoLitMod." From there, you can self-enroll in the course so the course content is always available to you during your time at Carlow University.
