Internet Archive

The Discovery catalog is populated with content from all of the databases the library subscribes to, as well as content from Open Access collections. one of the collections integrated into the catalog is through the Internet Archive. The Internet Archive—also known as IA or Archive.org—is a non-profit, public digital library founded in 1996 and aimed at providing "universal access to all knowledge."

Many of the materials on IA can be streamed or read by any user, but there are some materials that are within copyright. These materials are made available through a model called "controlled digital lending," meaning that, while these items are free to use, IA can only lend out the exact number of digital copies as it has at any one given time.

When accessing materials hosted on IA, you will follow prompts to "view full text" from our catalog, which will then take you to the Internet Archive interface. From there, you can view the item if it is open access or log in to borrow items available through controlled digital lending. We recommend creating a free account using either your Carlow email or personal email so that you can access all of their materials.

Currently, the Internet Archive provides free public access to:

  • 20 million books and texts
  • 405 million audio recordings
  • 4 million videos
  • 3 million images
  • 410 billion web pages accessible through the Wayback Machine
  • 200,000 software programs, including historic computer applications and vintage console and arcade games

To create an account, simply go to Archive.org and click "Sign Up" in the upper right-hand corner. Enter your email address (this can be your Carlow email address or a personal email address), create a password, and click "sign up." Once you sign up, you will be directed to validate your account by clicking a link in a secure email that the IA system will send you. It is important that you complete this step to finalize your account setup.
