UpToDate

What is UpToDate?

UpToDate is an electronic primary resource for point-of-care medical knowledge and research that has proven to increase clinical knowledge and improve patient care. This electronic resource acts as a quick reference manual on symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, drugs and drug interactions, medical calculations, and patient education that can be used while working directly with patients.

Why UpToDate?

Accessing UpToDate

To access UpToDate, follow the steps below:

1. Go to Grace Library's list of A-Z Databases by clicking on the A-Z Databases link on the Grace Library homepage or by going to https://ctrl.carlow.edu/az.php.

2. Find UpToDate in the list of databases and click on the link.

3. When accessing UpToDate from off-campus, you will be prompted to log in to authenticate your Carlow credentials and allow you access to the site. Your credentials for this screen are the same single sign-on credentials you use for your Carlow University email. UpToDate also requires that you reauthenticate your credentials by logging in through the proxy authentication screen once every 120 days.

4. After authenticating your credentials you will be taken to UpToDate. Please note that in order to use the full functionality of UpToDate, you DO have to register with and sign into a personal account. To create an account, click on either of the "Register" links on the UpToDate homepage. Creating an account will also allow you to use the UpToDate mobile app, discussed on the next tab.

Once you have created a personal UpToDate account, you will also be able to download and access the app from your phone.

Please note that you will have to sign in through the A-Z Databases link once every 120 days to re-verify your affiliation with Carlow University. This is mandatory through UpToDate. More information regarding this requirement is available on the next tab.

1. Once you have created an UpToDate account, you can download the UpToDate app from the app store.

2. Download, install, and open the app. From the homepage, you can log in using the personal account you created. Accept the terms and conditions of the app to proceed.

3. After you sign in, you can access the different functions of UpToDate from the hamburger menu in the upper right corner. Any CME credits you earn through UpToDate will be tracked at the top of the screen.

UpToDate requires that users signing in through an institutional license (like Carlow's) re-authenticate their affiliation every 120 days. Simply put, every 120 days you will have to log into UpToDate through the A-Z Databases link in order to re-verify that you have an active Carlow University account.

If at any time you are unable to log into UpToDate or are told you are no longer a verified user, start with this step. It is quite possible that all you need to do is re-verify your credentials.
