Credit, Classification, and Standing Information

At Carlow, 1 credit hour equals:

  • 1 hour of classroom instruction per week (approximately 50 minutes), and

  • 2 hours of outside work per week (such as homework, studying, reading, or projects)

For a 3-credit course, students should expect:

  • 3 hours in class each week

  • Approximately 6 hours of work outside of class each week

  • A total of about 9 hours per week, or 135 hours over a standard 15-week semester

This time commitment applies to all courses, regardless of whether they are in-person, online, or in an accelerated format. The total amount of learning and engagement expected remains the same.

Undergraduate Student Classifications

  • First-year: Completed 0-23 credits
  • Sophomore: Completed at least 24 credits
  • Junior: Completed at least 54 credits
  • Senior: Completed at least 88 credits

Full-Time Undergraduate Student Status:

  • Taking 12 credit hours or more in a given semester

Part-Time (also known as "half-time") Undergraduate Student Status:

  • Taking 6-11 credits in a given semester (taking less than 12 credits)
