Requesting Through the Online Catalog

One way to submit an ILL request is to do so directly from an item record in the online library catalog. This is the easiest way to submit a request while researching a topic. The images below demonstrate how to navigate the online catalog, view results from other libraries, and request an item through Interlibrary Loan.

Requesting an Item

Start Your Search

To get started, enter your search term on the Grace Library homepage.

For this example, we searched for articles about "patient falls." Since this is a phrase, we have used quotations around our search term.

Expanding the Search Results

By default, the results displayed are for items held by Grace Library. At the top of the page, you will see the number of results. For this search, we also applied search parameters to only show peer reviewed articles published within the last five years. Those search parameters can be found on the left-hand side of the page.

To see results held by other libraries, toggle the "Held By Library" option from "Grace Library" to "Libraries Worldwide."

Libraries Worldwide Results

Once you have toggled from "Grace Library" to "Libraries Worldwide," you will see that the number of results for your topic has changed.

In this search, you can see that the number of peer reviewed articles published in the last five years on the topic of "patient falls" changed from 227 held by Grace Library to 319 held by other libraries.

Select an Item from the Results

When you have located an item that you are interested in reading more about or requesting through ILL, click on the title. You can see more information about item availability on the next page.

Requesting an Item from Another Library

On the next page, the item record will show the access options for the article or book you are interested in. Under "Access Options" on the right-hand side of the page, click the purple "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" button to start the request process.

Interlibrary Loan Request Form

The ILL Request Form will open in another window. At the top of the form, you will see information pertaining to the item you are requesting. Scroll down to the next portion of the form to fill in your information.

Fill in Your Information

You will need to provide the following information in order to submit your request:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your full Carlow ID number, including the zeros at the beginning
  • Your Carlow email address

You can also provide us with a date you need the request by, an amount you would be willing to pay if we cannot find a library wiling to provide the item for free, and any additional comments you would like to include.

When you are done filling out the form, click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.

Request Confirmation

After you click "Submit," you will receive a green request confirmation, letting you know that your request has been sent through for the librarians to process and finalize. If you receive any errors, contact us at gracelibrary@carlow.edu or fill out the manual request form covered in the next section.
